Pre-Front Bite Produces Mutton Snapper & Sailfish Offshore
Monday morning delivered exactly what you hope for ahead of a winter cold front in Key West—calm seas, clear skies, and an aggressive early bite.
We left the dock at 6:00 AM for a three-hour offshore trip, running just beyond the reef to a productive small wreck. With pre-frontal conditions in place, the fish were feeding early and consistently.
Offshore Action Before the Front
We started with 40-pound fluorocarbon leaders to handle the heavier initial runs, fishing live pilchards around structure. The action began immediately.
Highlights from the trip:
- Multiple red snapper (released)
- Sailfish encounters with strong aerial displays
- A steady snapper bite through sunrise
As the sun climbed and the initial feeding window tapered slightly, we downsized to 25-pound fluorocarbon to stay dialed in. That adjustment kept the bite going and ultimately led to the highlight of the morning—quality mutton snapper that filled the cooler.
Pre-front conditions in February consistently create some of the most reliable snapper fishing we see this time of year in Key West.
What to Expect This Week in Key West
With the cold front now pushing through, fish are transitioning into shallower, protected water. Over the next several days, the nearshore patch reefs in 12–20 feet should produce well, particularly along the leeward sides of the islands where we can stay protected from wind while remaining on active fish.

- Cobia
- Spanish mackerel
These winter cold snaps often concentrate fish in tighter areas, making shorter trips extremely productive without long offshore runs.
